- Additional information
- This trilogy of plays involved considerable research into the history of the 306 serving members of the military executed for desertion during the first world war. Collaborative historical, contextual and genealogical research was undertaken with a doctoral researcher in History at St Andrews, with a genealogist, and with the families of some of the deserters. Research also included a visit to Picardy with members of the production team for the final play of the trilogy to experience the environment and observe practices of memorialisation. The author crafted his dramatic responses to the stories he encountered, using some verbatim material. The trilogy questions notions of heroism and memory by investigating major historical events through dramatic research, enquiry, writing and performance.
