- The Abbots and Priors of Late Medieval and Reformation England represents the culmination of an extended period of research, funded in part by a British Academy Research Development Award. The book is approximately 180,000 words in length and was sole-authored by Martin Heale. It draws on the collection and analysis of a large body of archival research, undertaken over a period of 15 years in libraries and archives in England, USA and the Vatican City. A wide range of unpublished and undigitised manuscripts were consulted, including chronicles, registers, letters, financial accounts, inventories, legal records, leases, armorials and state papers.
