- This paper presents detailed measurements of local scour around bridge abutments under various flow types, including free flow, submerged orifice flow and overtopping flow. The latter two flow types only occur after extreme hydrological events and when the bridge experiences flows beyond their design discharge and are not normally included in bridge scour studies. The paper highlights for the first time that submerged orifice flow is the worst case scenario in terms of local scour despite the fact that it does not occur at maximum flowrate. This paper received the Karl Emil Hilgard Hydraulic Prize (2016): https://www.asce.org/templates/award-detail.aspx?id=614&all_recipients=1.
