- The five plays collected in this anthology were selected through extensive research undertaken by Beth Palmer and Joanna Hofer-Robinson across plays deposited with the Lord Chamberlain through the 1860s and 1870s. Once selected each of the five plays were read in all traceable versions across key archives: Lord Chamberlain’s Collection, British Library (BP and JH-R), Mander and Mitchenson Collection, University of Bristol (BP), Mary Braddon Archive, Canterbury Christchurch University (BP), Robert Lee Wolff Collection, Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas (BP), Theatre Collection, Houghton Library, Harvard (JH-R), Petingell Collection, University of Kent (BP and JH-R), V&A Theatre and Performance Archive (BP and JH-R). The notes accompanying each play utilise this extensive archival research to detail significant variations between the print version, deposit copy and any other prompt copies along with available performance history and glosses of unfamiliar terms. This primary research also informed the co-written introduction (both editors writing 50%) along with extensive reading across relevant literary and theatrical history and criticism.
