- This publication consists of 85,000 words and 105 illustrations; the research took place over a three-year period and was aided by a major fellowship and additional grants from Harvard University, the University of St Andrews, and the College Art Association. In 6 chapters, an introduction, and a coda, the book analyzes the figural production of more than 10 major artists over a 35-year period in French art. An in-depth argument is offered regarding the foundational influence of the ‘comic’ figural type developed by these artists. The argumentation draws on historical evidence, seventeenth-century French literature, contemporary affect theory, and performance studies.
