- The size and scope of this output is due to the immensity of Schubert's vocal work: 706 pieces of music for voice(s) with piano—each discussed here with an accompanying parallel translation of the German text. 120 biographical articles on the songs' poets are also part of the sequence, along with numerous articles on a multitude of subjects associated with the songs and their performance. As the most detailed and lengthy study of the Schubert Lieder in any language, and with 693 illustrations and considerable after-matter, this three-volume output of approximately 3,000 pages is the culmination of 15 years' work.
