- This output is a worldwide critical review of all available global sources, commentary and data on the law and practices of life imprisonment, emphasising human rights and international developments. It is to-date the most authoritative and comprehensive interdisciplinary and multi-jurisdictional treatment of this topic. The bulk of the research was undertaken over an intensive 2.5 year period, plus a further year drafting and editing the final manuscript. The Leverhulme Trust was the primary major funder. Additionally, both authors were awarded visiting fellowships to undertake library-based research at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg, Germany.
