- The article compares variation and change at the level of grammar and discourse, between Multicultural London English and Multicultural Paris French. It examines the differences in the use of innovative features and their correlation with the main social categories. The focus is on the use of in situ indirect questions and general extenders. The study reveals that the discourse-pragmatic and grammatical innovations pattern differently, with the latter being more socially divided. The paper seeks to contribute theoretical insights into the processes of grammaticalisation and change while questioning the existence of a typically “youth”, “Parisian” multicultural French.
