- The paper presents an international standard for data and knowledge exchange about biomedical investigations – the ontology OBI. The standard has been developed by several international research communities from a wide range of biomedical areas, and consequently there are many co-authors that contributed equally to this publication. The reported in this paper ontology has been formally reviewed by OBO (open biomedical ontologies) Foundry developers and recognized as a reference ontology. Several funding bodies, e.g. NSF, recommend their applicants to follow the OBI standard. An increasing number of journals recommend using OBI for reporting study results.
