- In this article we revisit the notion of informal space through the analysis of cartographic representations as produced by urban planners. To this end we undertake a historical review of three key planning episodes of Buenos Aires (Argentina) developed during the post-war period. We focus on the effects of transparency that the analysed plans and maps produce to show how technical knowledge and political objectives are mutually structured, and how they naturalize a specific epistemology of informal spaces. The article contributes to critical theory discussions about urban planning practice and to analytical frameworks of urban informality.
