- The Idea of Russia: The Life and Work of Dimitry Likachev (xiv + 242 pages, I. B. Tauris, 2017) provides the first full and thoroughly researched biography of one of the leading Russian public intellectuals of the twentieth century. With 37 pages of endnotes, it is based on seven years’ research in English- and Russian-language sources, including literary and political archives, and on interviews, including with Likachev’s family. It offers not only a biography and a commentary on Likachev’s copious works but also a survey of Russian intellectual life from the tsarist and Soviet periods and into the 1990s.
