- The partnership between University of Hertfordshire, Torino and the Fraunhofer of Dresden (that leads R&D in hydrogen technology for the benefit of EU industry) began as part of the FP6-funded Network-of-Excellence in “Knowledge-based Multi-component Materials.” The reported study, conducted for the benefit of the Fraunhofer, was carried out under fuel-cell operating conditions and demonstrated the degradation of one of the best-performing sealant-interconnect combinations. The findings of the work led to an immediate change in R&D direction within the Fraunhofer towards the use of a protective coating on the surface of the metallic interconnect when using sodium-based sealants.
