- This monograph of 140,000 words is the product of ten years of research, based on extensive archival research in private and public papers, including at the Archives Nationales (Paris) and in departmental and municipal archives in Lille, Arras, Laon, Nancy, Roubaix, Ivry. Other archives consulted include the French Socialist Party (Paris), French Communist Party (St Denis) and various trade union organisations. The archives of the Communist International were consulted in Moscow, before becoming available online. The French communist and socialist press was extensively studied, as were a number of authoritative journals (Le Temps etc). A number of interviews were conducted.
