- How is theology discussed and orthodoxy defined at synods and are synods a suitable instrument for this endeavour? Many works of historical theology have examined the intellectual value of individual synodical texts and placed them in their historical context. It is also important to enquire about the forms and modes in which theology was discussed at synods and to examine the additional factors which lead to them becoming binding decisions, and this has not received the same level of attention. This essay examines the procedural dimension of two synod events in the middle of the fourth century.
