- The key output from Newell’s major ERC-funded, ‘The Cultural Politics of Dirt in Africa, 1880 – present’ project, this monograph is based on extensive fieldwork over many years. It explores the cultural politics of dirt as a ‘complex of representations’ that has the capacity to shed new light on mediations of colonialism, urbanisation and the environment. It is based on innovative methodological approaches and drawing on unique interview materials.
