- In preparing this chapter, co-authors A Coveney and L Dekhissi both surveyed the relevant previous research, including the very brief mentions of the two structures in question. Dekhissi was responsible for spotting this non-standard use of qu’est-ce que in the corpus of French films she collected. She was also responsible for interpreting and transcribing the examples from this corpus in their discoursal and non-verbal context. Other French examples were gathered by both authors. The data on the why-for structure were generously made available to A Coveney by J Cheshire, from the corpus of Multicultural London English. The analytical framework was developed by both authors. The interpretation of the examples, along with the categorisation of occurrences of the variables, was carried out jointly, but with Dekhissi being mainly responsible for the French data, and Coveney for the London material. The final section, on origins and parallels in other languages, again draws on the work of both authors. The writing up of the chapter was mainly the work of Coveney. The chapter was evaluated by two anonymous referees.
