- This is a volume edited by Witchard that includes both a single-authored chapter (‘Beautiful, baleful absurdity’: Chinoiserie and Modernist Ballet, pp. 108-133), and substantial single-authored introduction (Introduction: ‘the lucid atmosphere of fine Cathay’, pp. 1-18). Witchard was also responsible for the design of the collection’s overall research project, which constitutes the first book-length study of British modernism and chinoiserie, and for the commissioning and editing of the ten individual contributions from across a range of different disciplines. The book was a key outcome of the research project, ‘China in Britain: Myths and Realities’ (2012-2014), which was supported by an AHRC award under the Translating Cultures scheme, for which Witchard was the Principal Investigator.
