- The empirical research on which this book is based spans a period of 15 years, including four extended fieldwork trips to Brazil. The books theoretical argument on the longer-term evolution of labour militancy in different political contexts required returning to the source material several times to assess the changes. Much of the archival material used particularly those materials from the 1980s and 1990s is not available through public archives, and so relied on personal contacts, which took time and trust to develop. None of the books analysis had been published before.
