- Double-weighted statement
- The work is an interdisciplinary monograph based on comparative research undertaken in Wales, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic accessing nineteenth-century sources and archival material in three languages: Welsh, English and German. Work commenced in 2005 and concluded in 2015. To bring such material together is difficult, and sources are analysed utilising political theory about nationalism, liberalism and Enlightenment. The monograph challenges received historiography by demonstrating through a close reading of these sources the complex interplay of liberal universalism with the particularism evidenced by a minority culture, and shows textual evidence of the rationale for its effective assimilation.
