- This paper is seminal because it was one of the first to demonstrate the capability of structured metal surfaces for achieving surface-enhanced absorption spectroscopy in the terahertz band. The greatly enhanced sensitivity demonstrated by this technique paves the way for trace substance detection using a new modality of terahertz radiation, which would otherwise be prevented by the relatively long terahertz wavelength. The paper led to a successful EPSRC grant application (EP/M001121/1, £1.2M) where the surfaces were successfully engineered for cancer cell detection. Hanham’s role included all aspects of theory, experimentation and paper preparation.
