- The idea for the collection emerged from a series of small seminar sessions co-organised by the editors at the University of Nottingham and a series of virtual seminars with invited speakers. Kolassa brought to the discussion his expertise in composing and contemporary music while the other two editors were specialists in early music. Collectively, they investigated the use of early music in film, television, video games, and opera. These initial discussions led to a series of co-organised annual conferences commencing in 2015 at the University of Sheffield with subsequent conferences at the University of Edinburgh, Birmingham Conservatoire and the Open University.
The edited collection consists largely of papers presented at the first conference with other chapters commissioned especially for the volume. The three editors played an equal part in conceptualising the book and contacting authors. Kolassa was the main author (over 50%) of the proposal to the publishers.
Kolassa’s contribution to the book’s text was a single-authored chapter (Chapter 9, ‘Presentness and the past in contemporary British opera’), a co-authored introduction and a co-authored chapter (chapter 13, ‘Music in fantasy pasts: neomedievalism and Game of Thrones’). Kolassa’s contribution to the research and writing of both the Introduction and final chapter was c.50%. The editors had an equal role in the book’s editing. Kolassa was lead editor for Part 3 (‘Presentness and the past: dialogues between old and new’), the subject of which most aligns with his research specialisms. He shaped the intellectual framework for this part of the volume and made significant editorial interventions to ensure consistency with the section’s overriding themes. He also contributed to the editing of the other chapters. Contributors are from the UK, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, and the USA with a wide spread of seniority from PhD students to independent researchers, University lecturers and a professor.
