- This book explores the medieval papacy’s relationship to Jewish communities in western Europe. It analyses papal pronouncements in the context of the substantial on-going social, political and economic changes of the high middle ages, focusing on the characters and preoccupations of pontiffs and the development of Christian theology. Much of the material had to be translated from Latin and Hebrew, comprising a range of papal letters, conciliar legislation, canon law, chronicles and charters. Overall, the research was conducted through a seven-year period, analysing documents and editions contained in multiple European archives.
