- This invited paper reported the development of an optical biopsy probe using ultrafast laser fabrication techniques. For the work described, the lead author was awarded the 2019 "Prototype your Idea" competition run by Photonics21 (https://ktn-uk.org/news/uk-researcher-wins-photonics21-competition-to-go-from-concept-to-prototype/). The approach described in the paper was the subject of patent fillings in the US, Europe, China and Japan (WO2018138490A1 and associated filings). The capabilities we reported were key to our recent award of an £893k (80% FEC) STFC Consortium Grant (ST/V000403/1), through which we aim to develop freeform silica micro-optics for astronomy.
