- This book consists of nine chapters based on original research, each of which could have been published in a peer reviewed journal, together presenting an extended argument based on research conducted by the author for some two decades, proposing a reconceptualization of psychiatry, as a form of knowledge and practice, as a branch of social medicine. The work considers evidence from epidemiology, neurobiology, psychopharmacology, anthropology, social history and sociology - over 500 articles and books are discussed - in order to sustain this complex, extended and multi-layered argument through the rigorous analysis of evidence from a range of different disciplines.
