- Developing the future of voice assistants in vehicles requires an understanding of both the social and task-based interactions people expect to have with them. This is crucial for technology acceptance and minimising driver distraction. This paper shows we need to design them to be both socially engaging for users and effective for driving scenarios, and what specific types of language may be required for managing both interaction types. This work fostered two subsequent publications with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) on understanding trust with spoken driving assistants and developing guidelines for their design. JLR have distributed these guidelines to research staff.
