- This 262-page book explores the history of the relationship between literacy, education and nationalism over a wide period, beginning with a consideration of the United Irish movement at the end of the eighteenth century and concluding with an exploration of the cultural ethos of the independent state in the period 1922-1930. It covers political, educational and literary texts - from United Irish publications, on to the school books used in the educational system and to radical journalism and canonical and more fugitive literary texts. It ends with a brief consideration of the work of James Joyce.
