- Most commonly-used HCI design principles were developed in Western countries, and are not easily-transferred to other cultures because they fail to account for the local socio-cultural context. This creates a significant challenge for the global HCI community. This paper presents the first in-depth analysis of socio-cultural factors in HCI design conducted by an international, multi-lingual team. It proposes eight concrete recommendations for international capacity building. These recommendations, based on rigorous in situ research, have significant potential to influence HCI education globally and although only published in 2020, the paper has already been accessed by readers in Business, Design and Medicine.
