- ODFaNBI is a four-volume etymological surname dictionary, the main published output from a seven year AHRC-funded project (2010-17), employing four full-time academics and a large number of consultants specializing in a range of languages. It is the result of the sustained analysis of very large amounts of computer-tractable material from mainly primary sources to substantiate hypotheses about the linguistic and cultural origin of approximately 46,000 surnames, approaching half of which had never been explained before. The work also contains a 100+-page introduction situating all naming practices found in Great Britain and Ireland since surnaming began in the twelfth century.
