- In development, it became evident that the objective of Planck should be changed from pure photometric mapping to measuring CMB polarisation, requiring substantial design changes. I argued that this was achievable at no additional cost, a position eventually agreed by ESA. I led the development and provision of polarisation-preserving filters and focal plane optics for HFI, which were verified and calibrated at Cardiff with the polarisation-sensitive detectors. These instrumental polarisation calibrations were central to the extraction of the polarisation maps presented here. As a senior Planck Core Team member, I also participated in the review and editing of the manuscript.
