- The manuscript reported a novel three-dimensional self-supported structure for lithium-ion batteries anode using two-dimensional Zn2GeO4 nanosheets coated with carbon as the building blocks. This is significant because it addressed some of the challenges reported in previous work for germanium-based electrodes based such as fast capacity fading and poor rate capability. The well-designed nanostructure, with its ability to accommodate the volume changes during charge/discharge and improving the transport processes within the electrode, opened the door for more research on germanium-based anodes. It formed the base of collaboration with Northeastern University in China, leading to the establishment of a joint research centre.
