- The Music of Time was a five-year project, covering a variety of poetic traditions in different European languages (with some additional research in Asia). It also involved travel to several countries to consult archives and other material on the chosen poets as well as having to make author's own translations of much of the poetry and some background material. Running to more than five hundred pages, the book is a poet’s survey of 20th Century poetry with a wide range of political significance; this meant extensive readings in history and the political theory of various periods.
