- This article is based on the results of a major research undertaking, which involved myself working as a full-time researcher for two-and-a-half years. During this time I consulted over 15,000 original archival documents - many in a delicate condition, poorly catalogued, and all requiring advanced paleography skills to read. This involved a significant investment of time in archival visits and data collection. Qualitative information from these documents was converted into 4,300 entries in a complex, multi-layered, relational Access database, which was designed specifically for the project, and which then allowed for the extensive quantitative analysis presented in the article.
