- This is a substantial 571 page single-authored work analysing the ministerial level of authority Maintenon came to exercise as the Sun King’s secret wife, 1683-1715. It is based on extensive archival research tackling an extensive array of primary sources the core of which (Maintenon’s vast personal correspondence) is extraordinarily complex and cryptic to maintain maximum confidentiality. This is the first monograph on Maintenon in English and takes an inter-disciplinary approach focusing on queenship and revealing how the dynamics of power and gender operated in court, state, religious, military, and international affairs.
