- Based on research into subjects from the 14th c to 1696, vol. II reflects a huge interdisciplinary range of inquiry including literary history, history of science, history of art, music, topography, humanism, archaeology, educational practice, mathematics - in Latin, Greek, and French. The editor traced Aubrey's dispersed library, identified and transcribed his letters, identified hundreds of loose papers in libraries in several countries, combed and indexed a mass of unpublished, undated and almost wholly unstudied MSS to construct a biographical commentary consisting of 300+ detailed short essays and associated notes tracing Aubrey's knowledge over a 50 year period.
