- This book presents the first monograph-length, single-author study of personal narratives in a historical context since 2003 (Golley). It represents a renewed interest in “alternative sources” applied to non-western history. Most of the primary sources were Turkish publications long out of print, necessitating extensive research in the Turkish National Library in Ankara. Some of the passages from Turkish autobiographies were translated into English for the first time, and some are also enjoying a re-discovery in Turkey. The book draws attention to this trend in cultural history, showcasing the value of these autobiographical texts for the study and teaching of history.
