- The book is broad in reach and scope, built upon doctoral study and further research and reflection over subsequent years. The book comprises 120,000 words on two major “genres” (musical and historical films), across two distinct national cinemas (Hollywood and France) as they developed over the course of one decade (the 1930s). Many of the French films and attendant secondary sources (contemporary reception in the form of newspaper and trade articles) were unavailable outside of France and extensive archival research was undertaken in Paris. The book offers a new conceptualisation of film “spectacle”, contextualised historically and nationally.
