- This monograph is the result of 7 years of archival research (2010-17) in 13 libraries and archives across Italy, Switzerland, the USA, and the UK. It is the first book-length treatment of this period of music history, and the first attempt to situate these operas in this historical context. It involved new, in-depth analyses of several large-scale works and close consultation of hundreds of secondary sources and over 100 newspapers and journals. The vast majority of primary sources and many secondary sources were in Italian, as well as a significant number in German, requiring the author to undertake extensive translation.
