- This article investigates the states of potential made possible through the performed event of repeatedly falling, addressing strategies for capturing and communicating the experiential dimension of falling via its mediation through both lens (performance-documents) and language (poetic-textual lexicon distilled from conversation), with reference to The Italic I, a collaboration with Clare Thornton. Whilst recent academic interest in falling, e.g. Performance Research SI On Falling (2013); Falling, Kreider & O’Leary, (2014), often highlights the parallel between falling/failing, this enquiry considers falling (physically, conceptually) as a transformative ‘practice of the self’ or ‘training’ (following Foucault) for operating against expectation in thought, speech and action, as a motif through which to explore the process of artistic collaboration itself.
The article draws on practice-based research developed through a series of residencies, shared through exhibition-performance (e.g. The Italic I, Project Space Plus, 2014) and artists’ publication (The Italic I, Beam Editions, 2014) supported by a 2-year long Arts Council Grant (£12400, 2014 — 2016). Its critical concepts have been developed and tested through a series of related publications (e.g. peer-reviewed visual essay Drain, Athleticism, 2015; book chapter following conference, Fall Narratives: Interdisciplinary Perspectives, Routledge, 2016). Whilst the practice was collaborative, Cocker authored the various conceptual-theoretical articles.
Insights and outcomes from The Italic I have since been disseminated through exhibition (e.g. in The Alternative Document and Documents, Alternatives at Airspace Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent, 2017; Verge Gallery, Sydney, Australia, 2018; B-Side Gallery, Bath Spa University, 2018); peer-reviewed journal article (e.g. in The Alternative Document, special issue of Theatre and Performance Journal, 2018); invited book contribution (e.g. in The Creative Critic: Writing as/about Practice, Routledge, 2018); and conference presentation (e.g. Society for Artistic Research, Plymouth University, 2018; 8th International Association of Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS) Conference, Hong Kong Baptist University, 2018; and InDialogue, Nottingham, 2019).
