- Double-weighted statement
- There were two aspects underpinning the requirement of sustained research effort over four years in the production of this monograph. Firstly, the introductory chapters on fiction and social and historical context address a large corpus and a wide chronological spread. Secondly, the main part of the text relied on extensive archival work to consider and collate manuscript sources. The geographical spread of the archives involved and obscurity of some of these unpublished primary sources extended the research period further.
