- This is the first full-length study (pp.264) of the reception of Milton’s oeuvre in the Arab world. Mapping the consequences of censure and translation, it explores how Arab-Muslims read Milton in light of culture, theology, and politics. After reviewing all previous Arabic print reception of Milton, chapters analyse the position of Miltonic figures in critical scholarship, Milton’s narrative drama and theology, and Islamic creed and Arab-Muslim culture. Primary research was carried out by Issa on the ground in Egypt, Lebanon, and Tunisia, at publishers and libraries, via interviews with translators and writers, and via workshops with university tutors and students.
