- This volume catalogues and critiques, for the first time, the works of the award-winning Iraqi-Kurdish artist Hiwa K. The researcher commissioned and edited original texts, contributed an extended introduction, and produced a series of co-authored texts with the artist. The introduction presents original research on the artist’s practice in the context of critical debates about migration, the 2003 war in Iraq, and the politics of performance art. Despite increased international interest in Hiwa K’s work over the last decade, there has been no definitive record of his projects. Providing a key point of reference to the artist’s practice, these co-authored texts, produced over a two-year period, catalogue his work and answer this deficit.
As editor, the researcher worked closely with all contributors to the volume to ensure consistency amongst a diversity of voices. Renowned scholars, practitioners, and international curators, were commissioned to contribute essays, interviews, short stories, and first-hand accounts of the artist’s processes and practices. Contributors included Krist Gruijthuijsen, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Natasha Ginwala, Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung, Aneta Szyłak, and Bakir Ali. Accuracy and quality of the contributions was ensured through the close involvement of the researcher in all elements of the volume—including translation, design, and image selection.
Given Hiwa K’s experiences as a Kurdish asylum seeker, the volume also included original anecdotes, stories, jokes, personal insights, and aphorisms relating to his experiences. These were translated from English into the Kurdish dialect of Sorani. This is the first time the dialect has been translated into a book on contemporary visual culture, thus making a significant contribution to our knowledge of the artist and the Kurdish contexts that inform his practice.
The volume’s publication coincided with an international tour of Hiwa K’s works at Kunstwerke (Berlin), SMAK (Ghent), and ‘Documenta 14’, the world’s most prestigious art exhibition.
