- Interactive Sound Gardens follows Appleton’s long-term research concerning the placement of sound systems in outdoor settings. This ongoing research aims to create an augmented experience where sounds are set within the natural or cultivated external environment. The allied technical investigation has required the development of novel systems linking modular electronic systems of sound storage, sensor technologies and spatial sound distribution. Interactive Sound Gardens required the creation of sound elements which integrate with the themed content of these multi-sensory environments in a way that is not obtrusive and contributes to the immersive experience of children exploring the specific environment. This work builds upon Appleton’s long-standing research (since the early 1990s) including the solar-stream for the Garden Festival Wales which distributed sound moments of a mountain stream in the Brecon Beacons along the pathway of the festival in the restored landscape of Ebbw Vale and powered by sunlight. Over 30 years Appleton evolved these systems as new possibilities were presented by digital sound storage, sensor development and solar technologies. Thus, Interactive Sound Gardens are set in the context of a series of permanent works including projects for Tate St Ives, Earth Centre, Glastonbury and Princess Diana Children’s Memorial Garden. The new multi-sensory Interactive Sound Gardens for these children’s hospices are very specific environments which seek to provide an experience of escape and positive enchantment for these children facing dark and limited futures. Clearly these settings do not have mass exposure, but it is significant that the success of this long strand of work resulted in the invitation to research and create the Interactive Sound Garden for the Children’s Hospice in Cornwall (2015) and more recently fund-raising through Tesco’s Bags of Help grant scheme for the sound system and content for the Narnia Garden (2018) at Little Bridge House Children’s Hospice, North Devon.
