- This is a 347 page monograph. Its central problematic is of considerable complexity, requiring a multifaceted approach based in original archival research, close reading of literary texts, visual analysis, technical analysis, and applying anthropological theory. The analysis covers responses to art in Venice during a full century and examines a range of contexts, including popular religion and ecclesiastical politics, the Italian republic of letters and homosociality, and political ties between the Venetian ruling class, the Medici court and the Papacy. It examines a wide range of artefacts, including oil paintings, woodcuts and engravings, framing devices, printed books and handwritten letters.
