- Based on four years’ research, this 205-page scholarly edition of the bronze inscription, the Tabula Lugdunensis, is the most comprehensive edition ever to appear in English. The introduction considers the Tabula’s archaeological find-context; its reception in scholarship; the historical context of the speech it records; its epigraphic and stylistic features; its intertextual relationship with Livy and Tacitus. The Latin text is newly edited and translated into English. The wide-ranging commentary treats textual, philological, historiographical, and historical issues. An appendix offers, for the first time in 80 years, a newly-researched list of senators of provincial origins from Augustus to Nero.
