- The paper proves a fundamental coherence theorem in the theory of cartesian closed bicategories. Two different proofs, respectively by a categorical and by a type-theoretic method, are given. As a main upshot, the results of the paper justify working with the weak 2-dimensional simply-typed lambda-calculus by means of the established 1-dimensional theory.
