- Du Bartas’ twentieth-century editors neglected an essential source in the textual history of his late poetry. British Library, Royal MS 19 A XI, is a presentation copy of ‘Suite de la Seconde Sepmaine Du Sieur Du Bartas’. It contains the earliest known text of these poems, free from printers’ errors and in the correct order. Remarkably, it also includes a text of ‘Les Peres’ with over 800 verses absent from all printed editions. This article records the transformative significance of this manuscript for reading Du Bartas’s late works and identifies some of the most pressing tasks for further research.
