- ‘Fleeting Alliances: The First World War as Horizon of Expectation and Explanandum’ explores the history of historical writing on the First World War through the lives and work of four leading scholars of that conflict, two from West and two from East Germany. It moves beyond interpretations of the relationship between the two German historiographies that focus on antagonisms, asymmetries and mutual misunderstandings only. Instead it argues for an approach that positions historians’ fleeting efforts at dialogue across the Cold War divide within the context of their personal and political responses to the ever-changing history of their own times.
