- Double-weighted statement
- Shirley Thompson’s critical edition of Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s _Petits Motets_, presents 38 motets in two substantial volumes comprising almost 700 pages. Each volume contains a lengthy bilingual preface and comprehensive critical notes, collectively occupying some 200 pages. The editorial task involved a significant amount of work on the motet texts, in numerous cases identifying sources and concordances for the first time. The majority of the works appear here in a critical edition and in modern notation for the first time, the editorial work undertaking the notable challenge of modernizing Charpentier’s obscure notation in a manner intelligible to the modern performer.

- Additional information
- This two-volume critical edition presents 38 of Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s _Petits Motets_, part of the first complete critical edition of the composer’s works published by the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles. Between them, the two volumes comprise almost 700 pages, each one containing a lengthy bilingual preface and comprehensive critical notes (this material occupying some 200 pages across the two volumes). The preface contextualizes the works and includes a discussion of performance practice issues, as well as setting out the texts and translations (with relevant background information), and detailing editorial principles and procedures. The editorial task involved a significant amount of work on the motet texts, in numerous cases identifying sources and concordances for the first time. The examination of performance practice draws upon Thompson’s ongoing research into this aspect of Charpentier’s music and on her extensive knowledge of his notation and output which has developed during a period of nearly 30 years of studying the composer and his manuscripts. The majority of the works appear here in a critical edition and in modern notation for the first time. The editorial work on the scores modernizes Charpentier’s obscure notation in a manner intelligible to the modern performer, while still respecting the composer’s original intentions as closely as possible. As such, this critical edition is suitable for both study and performance.
