- Literary Cynics constitutes an output of extended scale and scope because of its length, the time it took to write, and the amount of scholarship with which it engaged. At 85,000 words, it is a contribution of substantial length. As a revised version of Rose’s PhD thesis, the writing process included four years of doctoral work and a further two years of revisions. Finally, it presents a state-of-the-art review on the scholarship on three of the most commented upon writers of the 20th/21st centuries (this comprises some 10,000 articles, monographs and reviews).
