- This chapter is a collaborative work between Bennett and Strange that emerged from the AHRC grant ‘Multiplatforming public service broadcasting’ (AH-H018522-2), on which Bennett was PI. This project sought to understand the function both independent production companies and the adoption of multiplatform commissioning and production practices by the major public service broadcasters – the BBC and Channel 4 – had in shaping the then future of PSB in the digital age. This chapter draws on interviews conducted by both authors with BBC personnel, including a joint interview with then Director General Mark Thompson, to produce an understanding of how new digital technologies and production practices struggled to emerge and thrive in a broadcast organisation. As PI, Bennett conceived of the Multiplatform Project’s overall research questions, methodologies and focus. As Co-I, Strange ensured the project remained industry focused, helped guide and provide access to key contributors as well as collaborate on dissemination plans. The chapter was written jointly and benefited from both authors’ input and background knowledge of the industry and relevant fields.
